80's Memories

...I was a geek, so the passage of the House Bill Whatever-It-Was in 1984 (no pass, no play) cracked me up.  It also grounded 90% of our championship-bound football team, which was hilarious.

The times I remember most are the basketball games and the camaraderie surrounding practice.

I remember the Challenger explosion.  Everyone was in shock.  After school, we went home and were glued to the television set for the rest of the evening trying to understand what happened.

My fondest memories were the times spent in FBLA.  I was an officer for two years and went to contests several years.  I won fourth in the state of Texas for Typing my freshman year and fifth my sophomore year.

The Challenger exploded in January of my senior year; I was home sick that day, and I turned on the TV to watch All My Children and saw that horrible footage over and over and over.  I will never forget that moment...

[1980] was a tumultuous year.  Our nation was in a serious depression; the oil shortage of the summer of 1979 had caused inflation of 15% during the year.  Gas prices rose from around $.65 a gallon to over $.80 a gallon-a substantial increase.  The minimum wage was $2.75 an hour and many of us worked outside of school for extra cash.
In the fall, the embassy in Iran was stormed and Americans were taken hostage.  There was an uncertainty about what we could expect after graduation.  Just before Christmas, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and our anxieties about our futures increased.
As freshmen, we witnessed the election campaign of 1976 between Carter and Ford.  As seniors, we witnessed and took part in the election campaign of 1980.  Many of us were eligible to vote for the very first time, and we became part of the democratic process.
My memories of my junior and senior years focus on Friday night football games in the fall and basketball games in the winter.  I seem to remember that we were quite good in basketball and posted a record of 32-5.  We were ranked in the top ten in the area.  Unfortunately, 4 of the 5 losses came at the hands of two district oppnents , and we did not play in the playoffs.  We had a great deal of school spirit and many of the students were active spectators at our athletic events.
